Hi Ladies,:hiya:

My son turned 2 in August and is still sleeping in his cot. We have a toddler bed for him but at the mo we're in no rush to transfer him until I get pregnant again. (Which could be anytime - fingers crossed)!

Should he have a pillow now he is 2? Also I am still putting him in sleeping bags at night and had'nt really thought about changing to a duvet until my friend mentioned it to me the other day.

Just wondered what everyone else does!

Thanks! Nat xx

Hey everyone,

Netmums Moderator here, just dropping in with some official information...

NHS advice says that pillows and duvets should not be used under the age of one; however, they don't say exactly when to introduce them.

https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/baby/first-aid-and-safety/safety/baby-and-toddler-safety/

It's hard to find official UK information on exactly when's the best time to introduce a pillow or duvet, however the US Healthline recommends introducing them from about 18 months.

They also offer the following tips which may help:

"The recommended age for pillow introduction is around the same time children can move from sleeping in a crib to sleeping in a toddler bed with a safety rail — or even a mattress placed on the floor — but consult your pediatrician about your child’s specific readiness."

"When shopping for the right pillow, avoid choosing a pillow that’s too big — this may help decrease the risk of suffocation. A firm pillow also is better for still-developing necks and spines."

Hi Natalie
I have had my son who is 2 1/2 in a bed since he was 13 months old as he could climb out of his cot. He also has a duvet and a pillow

They can have this from 12 months i think it is

Personally i wish i never gave him a pillow as they are bad for posture someone told me this after i had given it.

It is entirelly upto you though when you feel he needs one. You can get cot size pillow and duvets from IKEA which will help him get used to them

you CAN give him a pillow but if he is sleeping ok without it, there is no need for it.
both mine had started getting really restless and settling down on our pillows so we got them their own at about 12 months.
BUT, not a normal, standard pillow, but baby ones that are only less than 1cm thick.

neither one of mine have a duvet. it depends on the child really and how he sleeps. if he wriggles and is all over the bed, a sleeping bag is a better option in my opinion.

The guidelines for both are from 12 months onwards; DS seems to go through phases of wanting a pillow and not wanting one, so the offer's there of one and if he doesn't want it on a particular night i just pop it at the end of the bed. He does also have a duvet, but recently i've just put a fleece over him (if anything) because it gets so warm in his room and to keep him warm i prefer to put a vest under his socksuit rather than a blanket because i know he likes his freedom.

Jonathan ( 3 in Jan) has had a toddler quilt since sometime last year, and a pillow.  He trails it round the house with him, on the couch for naps, under the table for " being the dog" .  He has fleece on top of it for night time bed.  The quilt was about £7 in lidl, it's covered in wee rabbits and and teddies, wish I had got two.

We didn't give dd a pillow and quilt until she moved to her bog bed at 2.5.  She slept in a gro bag before that, and loved it!!!  She didn't want to give up her gro bags, bless her!

I got DD used to a baby pillow a few months before we moved her to a big bed. When she moved to a big bed at 2yrs8mths I gave her a proper size pillow (although a thin one) and a duvet. We got the duvet from Ikea and it's supposed to be a cot duvet but I think it's perfect size for her cot bed.

We bought pillow and duvet for daughter last month, she was 19 months and she has slept so much better with it! We had to change as she was like 'The Great Houdini" and could get out of all all her sleeping bags and so was waking in the morning really cold! She actaully took to it really quick and we think she is really cute when you say goodnight to her she shuffles her bum down and pulls the covers up to her chin! I was really cautious about what i was buying mind you and we went for a pricer set from mother care which was advertised as my firts pillow and duvet and was from 12 months! xx

ok I'll get ready for the shooting parade

...DD has had pillow since going into her cot at 3 months.  In hospital her cot was propped up one end.  As much as we tried we couldn't get her to sleep flat.  We tried propping up the legs of her cot but it never helped but putting a thinish pillow under the bottom sheet did help.  She also had a baby quilt from about 7 or 8 months with a tucked in flanelette sheet - she wasn't happy in the growbags anymore and she never was a real mover and slept in our room so we didn't feel worried about her slipping under the covers.

Her pillow was taken out from under the sheet a larger one given at about 18months when she had a very bad cold and couldn't breath laying down.  We've just been on holiday and she slept better with a proper quilt so will be getting one for this winter - if I can find one that fits a cotbed bed

We gave Moss a pillow and quilt at about 13 months.  We just use a single bed quilt but have turned it sideways so half of it is under the cotbed.  He sleeps better and is happier to go to bed with his thomas duvet cover on ;)

DS  (15 months) currently has a baby sized duvet in his cot but no pillow.  Has taken to it very well - considering he used to be in a sleeping bag I really impressed with him.

Having recently seen him build his duvet and bears into a small tower to rest his head on, I think it might be time now to head to Mothercare for a small pillow

Dd had a pillow and quilt when she moved into a big girls bed at 20 months. She has a normal adult thin pillow and a lovely all seasons anti allergen duvet from vertbaudet. I also got all her covers from there as I had a 40% off code.

No shooting down from me hun.  As I say time and again - we know our own children.  My son has slept on his front since birth.  I desperatly tried to do the recommended back sleeping thing but he was having none of it.  In the end I had to go with what he wanted....I used a sensor mat for my own peace of mind.

Good on you for understanding your child's needs and acting on it [smilie=thumbsup.gi:

When we turned the cot-bed from a cot into a bed. Basically he reached an age where he could unzip his sleeping bag and climb out. It was all rather worrying so we felt it was safer having him sleep closer to the ground!! Can't remember the age exactly - but he wasn't too old - but definitely older than 12 months.
