Hi I was wondering if anyone could shine some light? I came off the pill last April and haven’t had a period since, I have PCOS (mild case) and haven’t got pregnant yet, I’ve had bloods and scans etc but after seeing the dr at my first and now last appointment at the fertility they’ve told me I can’t get any help (clomid) on NHS due to my BMI being to high and with that they’ve discharged me! I’ve struggled with my weight all my life and tend to eat well, go to the gym 3 times a week etc but I am overweight. I feel so sad, embarrassed and like I’m a million miles away from getting pregnant and just wondering if this is something anyone’s seen before and if so any advice? Thank you in advance xx

I kinda of see that you have two options:

Ask for a dietician under the NHS. For a strict diet plan ect... To get your BMI down enough to qualify for the fertility clinic. If you've tried to lose weight in the past the dietician can do specific diets and adjust them when needed. It's all about calorie deficit. Maybe the support of a dietician and the motivation of potentially having a baby may make it different this time.

Or pay for a private fertility specialist but they may say you need to lower your BMI too before any treatment. But you'll have to check this and research first. And obviously some people aren't in the financial position to do so.

But also don't panic yet because I've been told it can take 12months for you to get your periods back.

I had a cousin with pcso and only one ovary, she was told as a teenager she wouldn't be able to have kids.... She has one now.

I don't mean any of this as blunt I was just trying to fit it all in!

Hi, dont beat yourself up drs are so far off a lot of times especially with pcos i actually found them awful and useless for this and the upset and stress they cause makes it worse bmi is also a load of rubbish tbh apparently my 5 year olds obese by the bmi calculators they use and shes a little stick insect so ignore them look up myo-inositol i honestly found this helped me massively with my pcos and its better than the chemicals that they want to force that are not much good also if you have been on the pill for so long it can take some people alonger time for your body to start to go through the motions again some are instant some are longer also stressing over it can make it worse have fun and some enjoyment take the pressure off i know it sounds daft but it can massively help ( there are some great fb groups for pcos and great advice) xx

I have been in your position and I am so sorry, I understand how it feels.

Firstly, I know that they only want to issue these drugs / treatment to those that they feel will most likely be successful. I get it. However it felt incredibly unfair to base it all on a BMI - it was like nothing else mattered with my health.

I needed IVF but my BMI was 33 so I was refused - despite being relatively healthy, active, rarely drinking, no smoking / drugs and I was young, fit and fertile - the issue was on my husbands side. I felt even more like I was being punished for MY weight - when I could no doubt have had a brood of kids if my husband had sperm!

I was also bitter as at the time my friend was approved for IVF - and this was despite being a smoker (but telling them she wasn’t - and they didn’t check), despite taking recreational drugs occasionally, still eating poorly (but BMI was good so who could tell?) and having a toxic relationship - she sailed through.

Sorry that I’ve made this about me 🤣 but I just wanted to say that I hear you - and it hurts to be judged.

However, what I did was- I just find my motivation from somewhere and lost the weight for the cycles. I know I’ve made that sound so easy - and it isn’t and it wasn’t. But I really felt like this what I had to do. I got through each cycle by the skin of my teeth!

And then the 3x NHS ones didn’t work - so I went private - BMI back to 33 (it didn’t matter privately) and first private go - it worked.

Have you looked into private? When I was looking into clomid, I vaguely remember it not being ridiculously priced? But this was about 10yrs ago so sorry if I’m misinforming.

I wish you lots of luck and I hope you can find some way to tackle this ❤️

Hi.

I am so sorry that you are struggling to get pregnant and sad for you that the fertility clinic have discharged you.

The reason I am responding is because I attended a Michael Mosley evening local to me and he spoke of a nurse who has PCOS and was overweight. It appears that she followed MM's programme and lost a significant amount of weight and fell pregnant with twins. It was really interesting and I truly understand how you are feeling. I suffered with endometriosis and struggled to get pregnant. Try to relax if you can.

I used to get the same response when i went to get help to have conceive. I have PCOS and have a high BMI. Eventually a doctor gave me provera to regular my periods and I was pregnant within a few months and had a little girl. I used provera again and had a second little girl at the end of last year. It makes me made the way they don't help if your over weight. Defo try provera.

Hi, I have a couple of experiences I am happy to share, that might be helpful.

For me, I had to go via ivf to conceive. My bmi was obese, and similar to you, always struggled with my weight. I was aware that healthy range bmi was part of the criteria to be accepted.

I did the 5:2 and was able to get it down. Once in the healthy range, I contacted the clinic and updated it, which meant I wasn't discharged.

I'll admit, I did completely beast it, some weeks having 3 days of the 'fasting'. And threw myself at exercise and run/challenge events, which st the time worked wonders for me mentally, and kept my brain focused on my goal.

I have a colleague whom both her and her husband were overweight. They went through private ivf, and weight was not a preventer for them accessing the treatment.

The NHS is a huge beast, which is why they have criteria in place for who can access treatment, giving themselves the best chance if success.

I imagine time/age are going to be some of your biggest factors, as in how old you are and whether you have time to spend 1ur on focusing on your weight before being re-referred, or going directly through private means. plus how much over your bmi is.

I wish you luck, its a tough journey
