Mangoes are low in calories and high in nutrients, which makes them the perfect healthy snack during pregnancy.

Mangoes also provide 18% of your daily folate needs. Folate is an essential nutrient during pregnancy. According to the NHS, it helps reduce the risk of neural tube birth defects, which can affect your baby's brain and spinal cord. A folate deficiency can also increase the risk of low birthweight and premature birth. That's why it's still important to take a folic acid supplement, even if you eat lots of mango.

Other health benefits of mangoes include:

  • According to Healthline, one cup of mango contains almost three-quarters of your daily vitamin C intake. Vitamin C boosts your immune system by helping your body produce disease-fighting white blood cells.
  • Mangoes are rich in magnesium and potassium. These minerals are important for a healthy heart.
  • One cup of mango also provides 2.6g of dietary fibre, as well as enzymes called amylases, both of which aid digestive health.
  • Every mango you eat is packed with powerful antioxidants. Research shows that these have many health benefits, including lowering the risk of heart disease and degenerative illnesses.
