Find out if it's safe to eat Marmite during pregnancy, plus precautions to take to keep you and your baby healthy.

The official advice on eating Marmite in pregnancy

Good news! It's safe to eat Marmite while you're pregnant.

Marmite is a delicious spread made from yeast extract, which is a by-product of brewing beer. Don't worry about this though – the alcohol evaporates during the Marmite-making process.

According to the Marmite website, it's fine to eat Marmite during pregnancy – in fact, Marmite is a great source of folate (the name for naturally occurring folic acid). It's essential that your body gets enough folate while you're pregnant.

The NHS says that folate helps to lower the risk of neural tube birth defects such as spina bifida, which can affect your baby's brain and spinal cord. A folate deficiency can also increase the risk of low birthweight and premature birth. That's why it's important to take a folic acid supplement while you're pregnant.

Marmite can be high in salt, so supplement your Marmite sandwiches with folate-rich fruit and vegetables like spinach, mangoes and avocados. You could also try Marmite Reduced Salt, which has at least 25% less salt than the original Marmite.

According to the NHS, it's important to eat a variety of fruit and vegetables while you're pregnant. Eating lots of fruit and veg will provide you and your growing baby with the vitamins, minerals and fibre you both need to stay well and healthy.
