Blow painting is great fun and you can make all sorts of fun pictures with this technique.

You will need:

  • paint
  • drinking straws
  • paper or card

How to make blow painting pictures

1

Mix up some watery paint by stirring together paint and water. Too much water will mean your paint will be too thin and roll all over the paper and too little water will mean the paint is hard to blow - so experiment with the mix. Place a large blob of the paint on your paper.

2

Take a drinking straw and get quite close to your paint and blow. The paint spreads out as you blow. Keep moving and blowing from different sides. Experiment with blowing in short blasts and long breaths and see what happens. (If you are doing this with very young children do take some time to remind them to blow and not suck and practice with no paint first as you don't want them to drink any of the paint!)

3

We made lots of colourful blobs and added googly eyes and drew on mouths to make these cute critters.

4

In this picture we poured a large blob of brown paint and blew out spikes to make a hedgehog, adding details with felt pen when our paint was dry.

Once they have learnt the technique your children will come up with loads of ideas for their blow painting pictures. Little ones might just want to experiment and make lots of blobs and blow together different colours. Older children might create pictures. Let their imaginations flow.
