We took my son for a birthday treat to Up at the O2 yesterday and I had to muster all my courage to join the family. You start with a video briefing then you're kitted up with walking shoes, suit or waistcoat and a special harness. There were quite a few worried looking mums and one Gran and a bit of a queue for the loo with pre-climb nerves. We needn't have worried - it really was fine. I'm not in shape but I managed it and felt very safe and secure the whole time. I think it helps that you are physically clipped on with a harness - even though you are high there are no sheer drops or scary looking places you could fall. It was a little steep in places on the climb down but no worse than climbing and descending a steep hill. There is a little wobble on the walkway but not enough to make it hard to walk. We were blessed with great weather, a gentle breeze and glorious sunshine on our climb. We had excellent visibility and could see for miles. We had great views of the Thames Barrier, Canary Wharf, Greenwich and the Olympic Park and our Guide was very knowledgeable about this part of London - he pointed out interesting things and it was pitched so that even the youngest was keen to hear what he had to say. Children have to be over 10 years old and at least 1.2m to take part and they run wheelchair accessible climbs which is a fantastic idea. If you are looking for a day out with a difference this would be a fun thing to do with the family. We went in the afternoon but we'd be keen to go back at sunset to see the 360 view with the sun setting on it.

Note: We advise you check these details are up-to-date before planning a visit.
